How this estimate works

The calculator first finds installed volume: volume = area × depth. It applies any optional order allowance after that volume is calculated.

It then estimates weight using weight = volume × density. The result uses the supplier density you enter, so you can compare the order volume with the selling unit on a local quote.

For example, 10 ft × 10 ft at 4 in deep is about 1.23 cubic yards installed. A 10% order allowance produces about 1.36 cubic yards before supplier density and pricing are applied.

Before you order

Confirm the supplier's stated density, selling unit, minimum order, delivery terms, and material description before purchasing. Density can differ with aggregate type, particle-size distribution, moisture, and handling.

The allowance is an editable purchasing buffer only. It does not predict compaction, settling, grading, waste from an irregular layout, or the volume a particular supplier will deliver.

Why do cubic yards and short tons differ?
Cubic yards measure volume, while short tons measure weight. The conversion depends on the density supplied for the actual material.
Does this calculator choose the material or depth?
No. It estimates a rectangular area using the depth and supplier density you provide. Confirm material selection and project requirements with the relevant supplier or qualified local professional.
