Mulch Calculator
Estimate bulk cubic yards or whole bags from bed dimensions, installed depth, and a visible planning allowance.
Mulch volume estimate
Measure the bed, choose a planning depth, and enter the volume printed on the bag if buying bagged mulch.
How mulch volume is estimated
The calculator uses bed area × depth, then applies the visible allowance using installed volume × (1 + allowance ÷ 100). Whole bags are rounded up from the bag volume you enter.
University extension guidance commonly discusses 2–4 inches in landscape contexts, but plants, existing mulch, drainage, and material type still matter.
Method & sources
Dimensions are converted to cubic feet first; bulk cubic yards use 27 cubic feet per cubic yard.
Important limits
- This does not select mulch type or prescribe depth for a specific plant or site.
- Keep mulch away from trunks and stems and follow local horticultural guidance.
- Bag volume, delivery minimums, compaction, settlement, and availability must be confirmed with the supplier.
