How this estimate works
The calculator finds the gross rectangular surface, deducts one optional rectangular opening, and applies your material allowance: order area = net tile area × (1 + allowance). It then divides the recommended coverage by the face area of one tile and rounds up.
Example: a 10 ft × 10 ft surface has 100 sq ft of tileable area. With 12 in × 12 in tile and a 10% allowance, the recommended order coverage is 110 sq ft, or approximately 110 tiles before product packaging is considered.
For cartons, enter the coverage printed on the product carton. Carton coverage is manufacturer- and product-specific, so this tool never substitutes a generic value.
Before you order
A 10% allowance is a practical starting point supported by manufacturer guidance for many projects. It is adjustable because diagonal and patterned layouts, irregular rooms, trim, breakage, and replacement stock can require more.
Confirm the selected tile's actual carton coverage and product instructions before purchasing. Measure each separately tiled surface rather than treating complex rooms as one perfect rectangle.

- Why is the tile count approximate?
- Cut layout, grout spacing, room squareness, tile calibration, and pattern choices influence the final piece count. The result is a purchasing estimate, not a cut plan.
- Does this estimate grout or mortar?
- No. Those products depend on the tile, joint, substrate, application method, and manufacturer instructions. Use the selected installation product's coverage chart.
Method & sources
Dimensions are normalized to meters and areas to square meters before calculation. The calculator rounds tile and carton quantities up, while treating values extremely close to an integer as that integer to avoid unit-conversion floating-point overcounts.
Important limits
- This estimates one rectangular surface and one optional rectangular opening only.
- Layout, cuts, patterns, room squareness, trim, and retained replacement stock can require more material.
- It does not calculate grout, mortar, waterproofing, substrate requirements, product suitability, or installation compliance.
