Deck Board Calculator
Estimate whole deck boards from deck dimensions, selected board geometry, and a planning allowance.
Deck board estimate
Enter the board geometry and product details you plan to use.
How this estimate works
The estimator uses courses = round deck width up ÷ (board width + gap) and boards = round courses × boards per course up, then apply allowance.
The American Wood Council gives approximately 1/8 inch as a dimension-lumber spacing example. Composite and other manufactured decking can require different spacing, temperature allowances, and fasteners, so the calculator keeps the gap editable and the selected product guide controls the final value.
Method & sources
Whole boards are rounded up after courses, board length, and the allowance you enter are applied.
Important limits
- This estimates surface boards only; it does not determine joists, fasteners, framing, footings, railings, stairs, or guards.
- It does not check structural design, drainage, local requirements, board orientation, or product installation instructions.
- The reset gap is an editable planning example, not a universal installation specification.
- Results are planning estimates, not an installation specification or supplier quote.
