How this estimate works

Joint compound is compound = area ÷ 100 × gallons per 100 sq ft (by finish level). The rate rises with the GA-214 finish level — Level 4 (standard) is about 1 gallon per 100 sq ft, and Level 5 adds a full skim coat.

Buckets are buckets = ⌈ order gallons ÷ bucket volume ⌉, rounded up from the full-precision order volume.

Cost is cost = buckets × $/bucket. Compound is sold in whole buckets, so the cost follows the bucket count and any leftover is shown as surplus.

For example, 1,000 sq ft at Level 4 with a 10% allowance needs about 11 gallons — three 5-gallon buckets, roughly 4 gallons of surplus, and about a $45–$75 range.

Before you buy

Coverage varies with compound type (all-purpose, lightweight, setting-type), taping method (paper vs mesh), substrate flatness, and applicator technique. Treat the gallons as a planning guide, not an exact order.

How much joint compound do I need per square foot?
About 1 gallon per 100 sq ft for a standard Level 4 finish, so a 1,000 sq ft job needs roughly 10 gallons before waste. A Level 5 skim coat uses about 35% more compound.
What finish level should I choose?
Level 4 is the residential standard for painted walls. Pick Level 5 only for gloss paint or critical lighting, Level 3 for heavy texture, and Level 1 for concealed fire-taping.
How many square feet does a 5-gallon bucket cover?
About 500 sq ft at Level 4 (1 gallon per 100 sq ft). A 4.5-gallon bucket covers about 450 sq ft. Actual coverage varies with compound type, taping method, and substrate flatness.
Is the cost estimate a quote?
No. It is a planning range from US bucket prices for 2026 ($15–$25 per all-purpose bucket). Compound type, brand, bucket size, and retailer all move the real price.
